Laughter and the Everyday God

Yesterday was terrific! In the morning, we wandered into a Lutheran church for worship and even though I have visited very few Lutheran churches, I immediately felt accepted. The people were few in number but you could tell were ready to receive us with all the love they had in their hearts. They had a new pastor, a young guy who was soon to be ordained. He had a great speaking style and shared from the story of the rich young ruler from Mark. All in all, a great morning and they even shared some cider with us as we left the church (much needed since temperatures in Chicago never got above the high 40’s)

Later that evening, my niece came over to my son and daughter-in-law’s apartment and we watched the recent episode of “the Office” and played the game “Balderdash.” We snacked out on popcorn, peanuts, trail mix, ice cream, apples, and more. The kids and my wife have an incredible sense of humor so we laughed till our bellies ached at the silliest things. It was so much fun just being together and enjoying each other’s company!

The reminder to me was how often God shows up in places that are everyday, normal experiences. He reveals himself in a church that is different from our tradition. He reveals himself in times around the table gorging on goodies. He reveals himself in silly games. He loves parties and those who are ready to experience all of life, laughing with those who laugh and crying with those who cry. If I could just remember that point! Life is full of opportunities to share life and share the joy of knowing Christ. Let’s open ourselves up to it!

I’m thanking you, God, from a full heart, I’m writing the book on your wonders. I’m whistling, laughing, and jumping for joy; I’m singing your song, High God. Psalms 9:1 (The Message)
