I did it! I can’t believe I did but I did it! I went (scary music with someone screaming in the background) shopping today! Wow! And somehow I survived! I could only handle about 2 hours of Christmas shopping. I wanted to prevent myself form becoming a raving maniac.
Here’s the thing I have learned while shopping. People are very motivated this time of year. They have something called tunnel vision. They must get to their objective. I was in the middle of an aisle looking at a display and had many occasions of people bumping into me. A couple of times, it appeared they didn’t know I was there.
It really is an interesting study on us humans. We really can be self centered at times. It is easy to see the individual as an object. Generally, we don’t do anything cruel but we don’t exactly go out of our way to help them out, unless it helps us out too. We either see the other person as a partner who will help us get to our objective or as our competitor, someone between us and our goal. I can even feel it welling up inside of me as I look for the best parking spot or as I hustle to beat someone in the check out line or as I reach for that certain size, certain color sweater that someone else is also eyeing.
It’s ironic really. As we try to buy something as a gift for a friend or family member, we are missing out on giving a “gift” of kindness or sharing or helpfulness to strangers. I will think about that the next time (dread) I go to the store. However, I think I will stick to internet shopping; much safer!
