Today, I visited a woman who is nearing the end of her life. She is such a precious lady that even when it appears like her last days, she still smiles and says “Thank you” to people who help her. Her daughter is there with her gently holding her mom’s hands and stroking her face.
The part that was especially moving to me was watching her husband with her. They have been married for 55 years and you can tell their love is real. There is this special twinkle in his eye when he looks at her and some pain in his face as he thinks about what is coming.
The husband’s love is so great that he is ready to let her go even though it is killing him. He remembers what life has been like for the two of them and how much he loves his “sweetie.” And he sees her current pain and wants like crazy for that to end even if that will mean tons of pain for him.
That’s love. It is the best thing and its the worse thing. But, regardless, we all need it like we need air. I know that sounds corny. All I know is that I witnessed incredible love today and it reminded me how much I want that love in my life! No matter how much pain it will mean!
