Several of us from our staff went to a great conference today in town. It was lead by two of the top two communicators in the country. This one day event was on momentum and it was what I needed.
One of the most significant things one of the speakers (Craig) said was this: “To reach people no one is reaching, you have to do what no one is doing. You can’t do what everyone else is doing!”
I love that! It is so normal to do what church B is doing down the street, to copy someone else. It is normal to say we have to have a certain program simply because it is expected. But, will that actually reach people who need freedom, who are far from God or will it simply appease people who have already found it?
He added that you might have limited resources but you need to see those limitations differently. Perhaps if we had all the resources we needed, we might not be able to see what God is trying to show us.
Putting those thoughts together, we have to take a leap that can seem pretty scary. If we want to reach the un-reached, we have to try stuff that may not feel comfortable with little or no resources to back us up. Our limitations might be a blessing since it may force us to try things that may seem unconventional and less predictable.
God is taking our church on a journey! It is not just a 28 day journey either. It is a journey to change the landscape of the community in our one mile radius and then our five mile radius and then, who knows?
We have to “do church” differently than we have done in the past. We can do it as long as we do it together! And, once we take those leaps of faith, God promises to be our back up!
