I am sitting in my daughter and son-in-law’s house and the temperature outside is hovering around the mid 30’s. That is a bit cold! The next few days the forecast is for rain mixed with snow. Yikes!
I think I have determined that I prefer “too hot” to “too cold.” Of course, somewhere in between would be ideal. That is not always possible. But, I for sure do not miss Michigan winters!
I enjoy heading to the mountains in the higher country if there is a reason. For instance, to play in the snow or ski for a day or two. But, that is only temporary. I then want to go back to the warm lands. Sure, we have to deal with the super hot months of July or August but the five months from November to March are pretty ideal in Phoenix.
I understand a bit better the words of the Lord in Revelation when he said, “I wish you were either hot or cold but because you are lukewarm I am about to spit you out of my mouth.” The idea that is being shared is that we need to decide to be “all in” in our relationship or to just be honest about our lack of devotion to God.
Most people I think settle for the lukewarm even those who claim to be fully devoted. Peter tried that in chapter 14 of Mark. He claims that he is on fire for Jesus and will follow him no matter what. He said he would never deny Christ. He lied.
But, let’s not jump on Peter. When it comes right down to it, most of us push toward the middle in terms of weather, politics and commitment to God. We would rather be in the middle somewhere since it appears “safer.”
But following Jesus is not about playing it safe. We have to get off the fence and decide whose side we are on. Peter finally figured that out by the book of Acts. Maybe its time for us to figure it out too!
