Impatience

My wife informed me today that I not very patient. I am not sure she is correct. I just want what I want… right now! I guess that could be considered a bit impatient.

We are playing the waiting game to hear from our son and daughter-in-law considering the birth of our second grandson! That may explain why I am a bit ready to hear some news. Most folks will probably give me a break on this bit of impatience.

But, I am generally not a guy that likes to wait for anything. I don’t like waiting at red lights. I don’t like waiting in line at the grocery store. I don’t like waiting for a book to become available at the library. I don’t like waiting for someone who is late for an appointment. I am not good at waiting!

I can’t wait for the Cowboys, my favorite football team to win again. I can’t wait for the Reds, my favorite baseball team to win again. I can’t wait for my next golf game or my next dessert. I can’t wait for the church I work with to reach more people in our community.

I am not sure where this comes from but I love immediate gratification. I have grown accustomed to having what I want when I want it. That is what America is all about, isn’t it? That is why we love “fast food” and “express mail” and “instant messaging.”

I know that I need to taper my need for speed a bit. I could benefit from slowing down and letting it come in its own sweet time. Unfortunately it goes against my hard wiring.

God is constantly reminding me through others, through the Bible, and through other subtle nudges that “good things come to those who wait.” I am trying. But, honestly, it is still a work in progress.

So, here I wait for the good news to come. I know it will be here sometime… hopefully soon! In the meantime… I wait. Yuck!
