I am not Italian but I feel as if I am. The reason I feel this way is my love affair with all kinds of Italian foods. I am a big pasta guy. Lasagna, Manicotti, Spaghetti, Linguini… you name it I love it.
Marinara, Alfredo, Pesto, and other sauces will get my mouth watering. And don’t even get be started on cheeses. Add to these dishes a little Focaccia or Bruschetta bread and maybe a little dipping oil and you go me for life! Even it all out with a little antipasto salad and va-va-va-voom!
I think though that the italian food I like the best would be pizza. I am not sure why I love it so much but I am convinced I could eat it at least twice a week. I have rarely found a pizza I didn’t like.
My favorite however is Chicago style. I love the thick crust and the extra cheese. There is a place in Michigan called Jets pizza that still makes the best I have ever tasted. I do like the originals of course from Chicago, Gino’s East and Giordano’s. Gino’s cheese is so thick you may have a heart attach just looking at it.
When I was in student ministry, we ate pizza all the time since it was a standard among teenagers. I am not sure some of the students I worked with would have ever survived without pizza.
All of this talk may be producing some hunger pains in you. Here is the thing I have been thinking about lately. There are so many amazing flavors in the world. I am constantly amazed by new tastes! Italian food with all its spices and herbs is some of the best and most pungent in my humble opinion.
I think God gave us all these great things to “taste” for several reasons. First, I think He wants us to experience all the multitude of flavors since He wants us to remember that life is not supposed to be ordinary and boring.
I also think He also gave us so many great things to taste as a way to understand a little bit about Him. He is such a prolific creator and wants us, who were created in his image, to create as well. Throw some stuff together and create a new recipe! We should be reminded of God when we do this and we become a little bit like Him as well.
Finally, I think God wants us to understand how good He really is. As a guy who loves to sit down to a good meal, I especially love Psalm 34 that reminds us to “taste and see that the Lord is good.” He wants us to be as hungry for Him as we are for pasta primavera.
Our taste buds really are amazing being able to experience the delicious varieties of foods. Let’s make sure we understand who gave us this ability to taste and remember to taste all the good things He has for us starting with God himself!
