So, you have started a new relationship with God. You may be wondering, “What in the world have I done?” You might be nervous about what you need to do next. You might be concerned that you don’t blow it. You might be excited to get started in the right direction.
We definitely want to help you take the first steps in this journey! Don’t worry; you aren’t supposed to get there overnight. After all, a baby has to crawl before it can walk. So, relax and enjoy the ride! God is going to help you with each new step!
First thing’s first. God wants you to engage Him in conversation. That is what we call prayer. Talk with Him, anytime, anywhere. He is listening. Talk with Him like you would any other person – except that He is always paying attention. You can talk with Him when you drive to work, first thing in the morning, at night before bed or anytime during your day.
Secondly, you need to start reading His word, the Bible. It is one great way that God talks with us. Start connecting with Him by reading a little every day. Find a time that works with your schedule and your personality. But where in the Bible should you start? We think a great place is one of the four books that talk about the life of Jesus. These are called The Gospels and are found in the beginning of the New Testament. A great one to begin your journey with is the book of John. Besides the Gospels, another great book to read is a short letter, called James. It is extremely practical and will help you with initial questions.
Thirdly, you need some folks to help you along the journey. That can be a small group of some kind, perhaps with some other Christ followers that you can become accountable with. We have some great campus groups here at North Hills that might be a good place to start. For instance, Alpha is a group experience that will answer some of your questions. We also have some home groups that can help you on your journey. Let us know how we can help.
Finally, start telling others! Let them know what has happened to you. You have some good news, and it should be something you want friends, family, co-workers, or classmates to know about! Make it natural; just share your heart. A great way to tell your story would be to be baptized.
That’s basically it! You are on a fantastic journey! Hang in there and trust God. He won’t let you down!
